Use Fertility Analysis Overview to track abortions over time

Abortions are never something farms want to deal with, but they remain important to monitor.
Many factors can influence abortion rates — heat stress, disease pressure, feed changes, vaccination timing, and more. When abortions are entered consistently, UNIFORM can help turn those events into useful herd insight.
In Fertility Analysis Overview, abortions can be reviewed across time periods and grouped by Days Carried Calf (DCC):
  • Under 90 days
  • 91–180 days
  • Over 180 days (up to 260)
This makes it easier to answer questions like:
  • Are abortions increasing or decreasing?
  • When in pregnancy are they happening most?
  • Did anything change in feed, environment, or vaccination timing?
  • Is it affecting all cows or certain groups?

Pro tip: Like the other areas of Fertility Analysis Overview, you can click the i button to see which animals make up that total.

How to enter them
UNIFORM does much of the work automatically, but understanding how it works helps build confidence when reviewing trends later.

Abortion can be entered as a Pregnancy Status.
This is best used when the animal aborts but will not start a new lactation.
If she will be starting a new lactation, you have two options:
  • Enter the Pregnancy Status = Abortion and then enter the calving
  • Or simply enter the Calving, and UNIFORM will count the abortion automatically on the Fertility Analysis Overview report when appropriate
Helpful to know
  • Only abortions entered as a Pregnancy Status can be found later in Report Writer
  • If an early calving is entered with the calf marked alive, it will not be counted as an abortion
  • If the calf is entered as dead, it will count toward both the DOA rate and abortion totals when applicable
  • If the calving is entered with no calf then the cow will start a new lactation, the abortion will be counted and no DOA will be saved
Example of that workflow
A look MyHerd (Version 6)
Some farms may not have seen MyHerd (Version 6) yet.

MyHerd is UNIFORM’s newer cloud-based platform. Today, many consultants already use it to review herd data uploaded from farm systems, allowing data entered in your current program to be viewed from anywhere. Some farms are also choosing to use MyHerd alongside their installed 5.4 program. This allows farms to explore the newer platform while continuing with the system they know.
As familiar reports are refreshed in MyHerd, new features are being added while keeping the same practical reporting style many farms already know.

Same report, new insight
In this version, abortions are shown separately as:
  • Registered abortions
  • Calculated abortions
Calculated abortions can include situations such as heats or rebreeds entered on cows previously marked pregnant.
This gives added visibility into where the numbers are coming from and can help improve confidence in the data.
